Unique Project at ARRS: King Cobra Radio Telemetry Project

We started the world's first king cobra telemetry project with a pair of kings in 2008. It was a collaborative effort between The Karnataka Forest Department, the University of Arizona and Agumbe Rainforest Research Station.

Radio transmitters were inserted into the snake's body through a simple surgical procedure.. These healthy snakes were then released back into the wild and are being followed by trained radio trackers with the help of local forest trackers. With the success of the 1st phase of the project the second phase was initiated in 2009. This study about King Cobra is the first of its kind in the whole world and through this we hope to learn more about this enigmatic serpent.
